Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are paper-thin porcelain shells that fit on top of your teeth. They’re used to improve the appearance of teeth with stains, chips, or other cosmetic issues. Veneers can also subtly change tooth size, close gaps between teeth, or make short teeth appear longer.

Some patients get veneers on all their front teeth as part of a smile makeover. If you don’t like the look of your teeth, veneers can give you the desired changes you are looking for without invasive procedures.

Veneers are considered purely cosmetic, but they can also offer protection. For example, if you suffer from enamel erosion, veneers can protect your teeth from further damage.

How are veneers and crowns different?

Crowns fit over the entire tooth, and they work as a functional solution for issues like broken teeth, severe tooth wear, and post-root canal restoration. Although crowns are made from the same material as veneers, they’re about twice as thick.

Crowns are typically the restoration of choice for molars or other teeth that get a lot of wear from chewing because they’re so durable. The procedure to get crowns is similar to that of veneers since both are fabricated for your individual smile, but more tooth preparation is needed for crowns compared to veneers.

How does the veneers process work?

First, you'll discuss your goals and needs with your 88 Smile Designs dentist so they can design a veneer plan that's right for you. Then, your dentist prepares the tooth with gentle buffing.

This removes a tiny amount of enamel, which serves two purposes: it allows maximum dental cement adhesion, and it leaves your veneer even with your other teeth after it's placed.

Next, your 88 Smile Designs dentist creates an impression of the tooth. This mold is the blueprint for your new dental veneer. Before fabricating your veneer, your dentist carefully matches the veneer color to the color of your teeth so it looks natural.

At the end of your first appointment, you’ll get a temporary veneer. This protects your tooth until the permanent veneer is ready.

In your second appointment, your 88 Smile Designs dentist removes the temporary veneer, then applies new dental cement before anchoring the permanent veneer in place. Your dentist uses a special light source to harden the veneer into place.
